Wellbeing programmes for young people with learning disabilities.

Being in nature has many benefits. However, one of the most amazing things is natures impact on mental wellbeing. When a young person is experiencing anxiety, nature can be a powerful antidote, improving overall mood.

The potential for nature to foster independence is particularly beneficial for young people with learning disabilities. The feeling of space and the sensory stimulation from being outdoors is vital. Outdoor activity requires young people to adapt to unpredictable weather and the changing seasons, which can be another positive challenge.

Young people with autism who regularly engage in outdoor activities experience improvements in seven key areas – social interaction, communication, behaviour, emotion, cognition, sensory issues and physical activity.

In each 2-hour session, we typically include a nature activity such as a nature walk, habitat creation, gardening or a wildlife observation/survey. This is combined with a creative activity such as painting, pottery, fabric dyeing, painting or cooking on an open fire. Occasionally, we run workshops that last for the full two hours.

Bookings

This 3-week programme is suitable for young people aged 16-25 with either a mild to moderate learning disability or mild to moderate autism.

Regrettably, we do not have the resources to support young people with minimal speech, who find it very difficult to learn new skills and who need support with daily activities such as dressing, washing, eating or keeping safe, regardless of a carer accompanying them. Failure to disclose a disability may result in us being unable to accept the applicant onto our programme. Please get in touch with us if you are in any doubt.

Please complete our Online Booking Form to book a place. Your booking is confirmed unless you hear back from us with a query within two working days.

Otherwise, we will contact you a few days before the programme starts with further details.
